The Green
Investor FAQs
How much does your service cost? |
 |
We offer two subscription plans. You can subscribe on a Quarterly
basis (regular price is $89 per quarter) or a Yearly basis
(regular price is $299 per year). The Yearly plan provides
the best value as it saves you almost $100.00 over a one-year period. Please
check our "Subscribe"
page for special offers.
Both plans give you full access to The Green
Investor newsletter and come with an unconditional
30-day money back guarantee for first time subscribers.
If not satisfied for any reason during the first 30 days, The
Green Investor will be glad to issue
a full refund. Please read our Refund/Cancellation Policy.
There is no long-term commitment.
You can cancel at any time but after the initial 30-day period there are
no refunds for any reasons.
If you decide to subscribe to our service, you will first be billed after
you complete our subscription process (using our "Subscribe"
page). You will then choose a User ID and Password which gives you immediate
access to the latest edition of the newsletter and other subscriber-only
resources of the web site.
Unless you cancel the service, your subscription will automatically renew at the end of the subscription period at the then current price. This helps prevent any lapses in membership.
Can I upgrade from a Quarterly to a Yearly subscription plan? |
 |
Yes! Upgrading is advantageous and simple. A regularly
priced Yearly subscription plan costs $299 and will save
you nearly $100.00 annually. Please check our "Subscribe"
page for special offers.
To find details and initiate the upgrade process, quarterly subscribers
must log in and click on the "Show me how" upgrading button
located on the "My Profile" page.
What do I get as part of the service? |
 |
Once a subscriber, you can log in to the site to access the latest monthly newsletter as well as our current Buy and Sell recommendations for green stocks and ETFs. You will receive mid-month e-mail updates and occasional specific e-mail alerts, should one of our recommended stocks warrant such a notification
Do you have a Referral Program? |
 |
Yes, we do! You can refer any friend, relative or colleague and we reward
you for each new subscriber with 1 month free subscription.
You can refer as many people as you like, and you will keep receiving a
free subscription month for every one that subscribes and remains a subscriber
for at least 30 days.
Some creative subscribers even post their referral URL in online chat rooms, forums, newsgroups, etc. to get credit.
For all the details on our Referral Program visit the "Referrals"
page after you log in.
How can I offer The Green Investor subscription as a gift? |
 |
The best way to proceed is to simply go through a brand new registration
by clicking on the "Subscribe"
link on our web site and following the simple steps. In Step 3
we recommend you fill out the Personal Information for the gift recipient
with the exception of the e-mail address which should initially be yours
(or the gift recipient will receive our confirmation e-mail with the amount
you paid as well as any other e-mails we send prior to you informing her/him
of the gift). Of course the Payment Information is yours and it is perfectly
secure as we do not display the full card number in the "My Profile"
page.
The only extra steps remaining to complete your gift subscription are:
- Send us an e-mail to support@thegreeninvestor.com
requesting us to remove your credit card information from the gift
account to prevent automatic renewal if you don't want to make this
a continuous gift (make sure you include the User ID
of the gift account in your request)
- Last but not least, at the time of your choosing, inform the lucky
recipient of your wonderful gift and be sure to give her/him the web
site address www.thegreeninvestor.com
and their personal User ID and Password.
You should also instruct them to go to the "My Profile"
page when they first log in and change the e-mail address to their own
(or they will not receive our regular e-mails or any other notifications)
How do I cancel and discontinue the service? |
 |
You can cancel at anytime. You simply have to send a cancellation request
by e-mailing us at support@thegreeninvestor.com
or by using our "Contact
Us" page. Please specify your User ID in the
message.
Please read our Refund/Cancellation
Policy.
Is The Green Investor related to any of the Fraser Partners
newsletters? |
 |
The Green Investor
and Fraser Partners (which includes TimingCube, ETFTide, TradeGuru) are separate companies and their recommendations are completely unrelated. However, Andreas Schreyer, our Founder and Editor, is a partner in Fraser Partners and the companies are affiliated.
What is your investment philosophy? |
 |
We are first and foremost long-term investors and not frequent traders. We do not look at minute or hourly charts to make a quick buck. We are growth investors targeting high growth markets, and within these markets, we seek well-positioned companies with current or projected rapid sales and earnings growth. The foundation of our investing is fundamental research and analysis, of everything that could have some bearing on our market sectors and our investments. Disciplined investing and money management are vital to financial security. We use our fundamental analysis to decide in which sectors and in which companies to invest and we use technical analysis for proper trading guidance.
How do you identify key trends in the green space? |
 |
We study the macroeconomic situation, the broad stock markets as well as individual green market sectors to find the key trends, their potential size, and understand in which part of their life cycle they are, in search of the ones in or about to enter the growth phase. We want to know everything about the status and direction of relevant technologies, capital costs, energy costs and project financing. We analyze all these fundamentals and trends to identify the opportunities and the pitfalls, and then we position ourselves according to that research. We also watch Washington, the states and governments in other key countries worldwide for green-related legislation and regulations. Some might view government programs as interference or wasteful spending but, like it or not, they are a key driver for the green industry which we will not ignore.
How do you decide which companies to invest in? |
 |
We study the players in our selected sectors in order to find the companies
with the strongest and most sustainable competitive positions, and if they
pass our due diligence we add them to our recommendations when they are
cheap, or as cheap as such great companies ever get. We flag our stock recommendations
by category (conservative/moderate/aggressive/speculative), but the alternative
energy market segment is still small and highly volatile and as such requires
the investor to be patient and risk-tolerant.
How do you pick your stock recommendations? |
 |
We focus exclusively on equity (stock) of companies involved in our targeted
green industries. Our portfolio is diversified by industry sector (but all
within the green industry), geography, risk level and company size. We want
to own companies which provide a current, or the potential for future, high
degree of exposure to the green markets we target. Besides the fundamental
characteristics we look for, our companies must have clear distinctive competencies,
committed customers (i.e. sales), be innovative, be profitable or have a
clear path to unsubsidized profitability. With respect to company size,
we concentrate primarily on small and mid cap companies. Since we are not
investment bankers or venture capital firms we will not be able to invest
in private companies (and we probably would not even if we could).
Can I invest in international stocks? |
 |
One of the challenging realities of the green sector is that many leading companies happen to be foreign and exclusively traded on foreign stock exchanges. It is possible, but not very easy for individual US investors to trade these stocks. However, global ETFs allow us to do so without any problem. Fund managers are able to trade on foreign exchanges and give us access to companies otherwise unreachable, all in one compact ETF portfolio. Which leads us to the next question:
What about investing in ETFs? |
 |
The best way to play this rapidly evolving market is to selectively diversify. In addition to our company recommendations we definitely want to include green ETFs, some of which let us own over 80 green stocks in one shot, many of them foreign companies which we could not easily invest in otherwise. ETFs are generally well diversified, transparent, liquid and affordable investment vehicles.
How diversified are ETFs? |
 |
Green ETFs are by definition non-diversified from an industry sector stand-point, as they narrowly focus on the alternative or clean energy sectors. Some are even more targeted, like the Solar and Wind categories. The ones we label "diversified" cover the main green market sub-segments including biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar and wind. The global ones are geographically diversified and all invest in a range of company types and sizes, ranging from small caps to large caps. Most important, they are diversified by representing an entire basket of stocks, with any one company only representing a small fraction of the fund's assets (typically less than 3%).
Are ETFs really as liquid and transparent as they seem? |
 |
Yes! Since ETF shares can be created and unwound in real time, the liquidity of an ETF is not related to its daily trading volume but rather to the liquidity of the stocks comprised in the index. ETFs typically have small spreads (generally less than 1%) because market makers, specialists and arbitrageurs all interact and compete to effectively flatten the premiums and discounts to fair market value.
By definition, with an index ETF, there is no question as to what it invests in or what performance to expect in relation to the index, unlike actively-managed closed-end funds and mutual funds which follow the whim of the fund manager. ETFs are highly regulated and scrutinized, so they're less prone to all the illegal practices and fraud that have plagued the mutual fund industry. The market risk of an ETF -- or how much you can lose -- is identical to the index it tracks and the type of underlying assets.
Is there a suggested timeframe to trade your recommended stocks? |
 |
We issue broad recommendations to buy, hold, or sell positions in our green portfolio. Our selections are by and large intended to be long-term holdings with substantial growth and appreciation prospects. We typically seek stocks with the potential of delivering at least a 100% return over the next few years. On occasion, should one of our recommended stocks warrant such a notification, we might issue specific e-mail alerts.
How and when do I get notified about changes in your stock recommendations? |
 |
Our monthly newsletter and mid-month e-mail updates will inform you of any
changes in our recommendations. We do not micro-manage your trading as to
specific entry or target exit points but we will on occasion issue subscriber
alerts to sell, take partial profits, accumulate, etc. Keep in mind though
that we issue broad recommendations to buy, hold, or sell positions in our
green portfolio. Our selections are by and large intended to be long-term
holdings with substantial growth and appreciation prospects. We typically
seek stocks with the potential of delivering at least a 100% return over
the next few years.
