Energy Efficiency

Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFL)
According to the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 62% of the power generated in the U.S. is lost - either through transmission or by poorly optimized appliances, lights, and other devices. It is not only the proverbial low hanging fruit of energy savings but also a must if renewable energy sources are going to become a larger share of the total and be integrated in the infrastructure.

Energy efficiency is predicted by many industry insiders to be one of the biggest investment sectors for the next decade. The government is preparing to prime the pump with the $3.3 billion in federal stimulus grants under the Department of Energy's Smart Grid Investment Grant Program being the most visible.

The primary energy efficiency sectors we are covering in the newsletter and investing in are as follows:

Building industry

  • Insulation, cool roofs, heat pumps, etc.
  • Appliance and lighting
  • Building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV)
  • Building automation (including smart meters)
Industrial sector

  • Cogeneration (combined heat and power or CHP systems)
  • Recovered energy generation (REG)
Smart grid

  • Overlay of information technology and communications with the grid
  • Transmission capacity
  • Grid-connected storage
  • Utility load management
